Cancel insurance only after the donated car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the insurance change date. Canceling earlier can leave you uninsured for a loss on a car you still legally own, and some states penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
If the Nevada DMV requires plate return, plate transfer, or registration cancellation first, do that before you call the insurer.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do not change the insurance while the car is still waiting for pickup. First, confirm the vehicle has been picked up and that the signed title was handed off as instructed. Keep the pickup receipt, donor paperwork, and a photo or copy of the signed title page if you made one before hand-off. This date becomes your insurance change date.
Handle plates or registration
Before you cancel, handle any plate or registration step your DMV requires. Some states require plates to be surrendered, transferred, or a registration to be canceled before insurance ends. Other states let you keep or transfer plates while updating the record. If you are not sure which applies, check the Nevada DMV instructions first and complete that step before the insurance call.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurance company after the DMV-related step, if any, is done. Give the donation date as the pickup/title-transfer date. Ask the representative to make the change effective on that date, not an earlier date. If the insurer asks for proof, offer the pickup receipt, title hand-off record, donation paperwork, or DMV confirmation you kept.
Remove or cancel coverage
If this is a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle and keep the remaining vehicles insured. If this was your only vehicle on the policy, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you plan to buy or drive another vehicle soon, ask about maintaining continuous coverage so you do not create an avoidable gap.
Ask for any premium refund
If you paid ahead, ask whether a prorated refund is due from the effective cancellation or removal date. Many refunds are handled automatically, but ask for the amount, method, and expected processing path in writing. If fees, minimum premiums, or state rules affect the refund, have the insurer point to the policy language instead of relying on a verbal summary.
Save written confirmation
Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, VIN, effective date, and whether the policy was canceled or only the donated car was removed. Save that with your pickup receipt, title copy, plate or registration proof, and donation records. If you still need the related ownership record step, use our Release of Liability guide.
Why this order protects you
The key risk is a gap between insurance and ownership records. If something happens before pickup, the vehicle may still be yours, so the policy should still be active. If the vehicle remains registered after insurance ends, a state may treat that as a lapse even though you donated it. The safe order is simple: transfer possession and title first, finish plates or registration if required, then end or change insurance. Keep each confirmation in one folder until your donation paperwork and refund are settled.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance before pickup if the pickup is scheduled?
No. Keep the vehicle insured until pickup is complete and the signed title has been handed off. A scheduled pickup is not the same as a completed transfer. If damage, theft, or a crash happens before hand-off, canceling early can leave you with an uninsured loss or a registration-related problem.
What if my donated car is on a multi-car policy?
Do not cancel the whole policy unless you mean to end coverage for every vehicle on it. Ask the insurer to remove the donated car by VIN effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. Confirm the other vehicles, drivers, and coverages stay active, and ask for an updated declarations page or written confirmation.
What if this was my only insured vehicle?
If the donated car was the only vehicle on the policy, you will usually cancel the policy instead of removing a vehicle. Make the effective date the pickup/title-transfer date. If you expect to buy, borrow, or regularly drive another vehicle soon, ask the insurer about options for continuous coverage before ending the policy.
Will I get a refund after canceling or removing the car?
If you prepaid the premium, ask for a prorated refund from the pickup/title-transfer date. The insurer can confirm whether the refund goes back to your payment method, arrives by check, or is applied to another balance. Get the refund amount and effective date in writing before you end the call.
More donation prep guides
After the vehicle is picked up, the title is handed off, and any DMV plate or registration step is handled, insurance is usually the last account to close. Heart Wheels donors should keep the insurer confirmation with their donation records. Your vehicle donation benefits Heritage for the Blind (EIN 58-2164446).
